Please note that the Tuareg people live off the animals they find in the Sahara desert. They eat the meat and use the skins to had make products to sell to make some tiny money for survival.

Leatherworking
The leather work represents an art in the Berber culture of North Africa especially for the Tuaregs. Animals are bred for food, clothes, bags, saddles, and water bags, rugs, shoes, wallets and many other items used in their everyday lives. Everything is done by hand. Sometimes you noticed some imperfections with the items, that is because no machines were used. Sometimes products are slightly different than what you see on the pictures, and that is for the same reason. Please let us know if you don't agree with that.
The leather for its flexibility and resistance is used for making a multitude of objects in Algeria (horse saddles, slippers, cushions, handbags, etc. ...). The most active centres are the highlands, the Hoggar and the Mzab. Big cities like Tlemcen, Constantine retained the expertise of artisan tannery (debbaghines), but now this knowledge is lost faced with competition from Europe.
The craft of Tuareg in this area presents originalities such as taghallabt, an object shaped wallet or aghreg, which is a travel bag. The leather of the region comes from goats or camels. It is coloured with copper oxide giving it green hues and decorated with symbols of the Tifinagh inspired alphabet.
In Kabylia, sheepskins and goatskins are also sometimes transformed to make bags and travel bags without decoration.Currently the Algerian leather sector is in crisis and needs rehabilitation due to globalization and severe competition (Inspiration from Wikipedia.org)

Hacene, thank you for your notification, I shall look forward to receiving the Sand Roses. And it is exciting to think my belts are being handmade especially for me in Algeria - it is obviously a fascinating country. I'm too old to travel now, but love learning about places I have never seen. The photos (modern and old) are fascinating. I run a very tiny gift shop in a very tiny place (Lemon Tree Passage). The shop is part of the waterside unit my husband Ray and I live in. Not to make a profit, but to keep me occupied and interested as he is an invalid now. The community is getting familiar with the fact that The Little Gift Shoppe always has something unusual. Not that you need to know all that, but I had to compliment you on your web site. I don't know who has created it for you, or if indeed you have put it together yourself, but whichever applies, it is one of the best sites, both from content and composition that I have visited. Azul fellawen Cela fait quelques semaines que j'ai découvert ce site berbére et c'est presque chaque jour que je rentre pour l'exploiter de plus en plus. Ce que j'ai aimé dans ton site Hacene est le fait que tu as inclus un peu de tout : la poésie, l'histoire, les traditions,........etc .De penser a inclure : les sites, les travaux, accomplies par les autres ma beaucoup touché, car cela prouve ta bonne foie de vouloir valoriser et rendre connu tout ce qui a rapport avec nous les berberes. Je t'encourage a perseverer Hacene et de y aller plus loin avec ca. L'Australie est un pays ou notre communauté ne se retrouve pas trop, alors j'imagine qu'il faut plus de travail et d'efforts qu'ailleurs , Mais je comprends également que vous avez le plus important : la volonté et la patience .
